Historic Downtown Statesville has a lot of beautiful buildings and landmarks including the original comer stone from the 1700's. A walking tour, scavenger hunt or something along those lines might interest them. There is also a fresco located at the Statesville Civic Center that they may find interesting. “A Walk Back in Time" is a self-guided walking tour of the downtown area featuring information on the area's history, buildings and unique architecture. The tour takes about two hours but you may want to split it up, stop for lunch or ice cream, shop, etc.

Also in Downtown Statesville is the Statesville Civic Center, There is a fresco located at the Statesville Civic Center and special children's and family programming is scheduled during the summer. 704-878-3493 or www.statesvilleciviccenter.com

Fort Dobbs State Historic Site is the location of the only French and Indian War fort in North Carolina and marked the western most frontier hi the 1700's.  Contact the site manager to arrange a visit at 704-873-5882 or www. fortdobbs.org

Love Valley is a western style resort town about 15 miles north of Statesville. They have the old west type buildings, you can only drive so far and then you either walk or ride a horse, etc.  Rodeos and other special events are held regularly March through October, particularly on the weekend. Horse rentals are available. Most shops open weekends only.   www.townoflovevalley.com.

Lake Norman State Park has a swimming area, hiking trails, mountain bike trail, picnic areas and boat launch. 704-528-6350 or http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/lano/main.php

The City of Statesville Recreation & Parks Department has a variety of parks with playground equipment and walking trails in addition to athletic fields. Lakewood Park located behind the National Guard Armory at Hartness Road features picnic shelters, walking trail and a duck pond. The Iredell County Recreation Department offers a ropes course that can be tailored for team building for youth groups as well as adults. 704-878-3103 www.co.iredell.nc.us/Departments/Recreation

Allison Woods is located in the north of Statesville. They offer a variety of programs to groups relating to environment, plant life, nature, etc. Reservations required. 704-872-1930 or www.allisonwoodslivinghistory.org.

Fun Station 2000 is located on Hwy 115/Center Street on the northern end of town. They have video games, batting cage, and some rides inside but I'm not sure what the age/size cut-off is for those. Marquee Cinema is a new 10 theater facility located off Eastside Drive. Party/group rental available. 704-871-8664 or www.marqueecinemas.com.


Iredell Museums, Inc. offers exhibits, special events and other activities that may be of interest. The Children's Museum Satellite location in Signal Hill Mall offers hands on activities. Children's Museum 704-872-7508 or www.iredellmuseums.org.

Zootastic Park recently celebrated it's grand opening.  Zootastic is a facility and zoo featuring both exotic and barnyard type animals located in the beautiful North Carolina countryside and will delight all ages.  Special events held throughout the year, Junior Zookeeper Summer Camps, school and other group are welcome.  For more information, please call 704-245-6446 or go to www.zootastic.com.

The Hiddenite Center is based in the Lucas Mansion, a Victorian era home. A variety of exhibits, including a toy and doll exhibit on the third floor, are located hi the center. 828-632-6966 or www.hiddenitecenter.com

Hiddenite Gems is about 10 miles west of Statesville and kids love it! They can dig for gems, go sluicing, view gems that have been mined etc. Just be prepared - they will probably get very dirty but they'll also love every minute of it. 828-632-3394 or www.hiddenitegems.com

Darshana Hall Plantation was the largest plantation in the area and features buildings dated back as far at the 1750's. Recognized as a National Historic Register Property, the plantation is a private residence and open to the public for prearranged tours.   704-872-3608 or www.darshanahallplantation.com

Lazy 5 Ranch is located in Mooresville and features over 700 animals from six continents. Drive through or schedule a wagon ride. 704-663-5100 or www.lazy5ranch.com

Queens Landing in Mooresville is the location of the Catawba Queen, a Mississippi riverboat style ship, and the Lady of the Lake, a modern yacht type ship,  that offer lunch and other cruises on Lake Norman.
